Gordon "Beaver" Charles Crawford
November 12, 1942 - December 4, 2021
Tribute
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gordon “Beaver” Crawford on December 4, 2021, in Powell River, BC. Predeceased by his parents, Charles and Cecile, and his brother, Bob, Gord is survived by his daughter Suzanne (Peter) Bornestig, son Rob (Jen) Crawford, granddaughters Cloe and Britt, niece Ann-Marie (Gord) Milne, nephews Rob Crawford, Paul (Andrée) Crawford, his family in Ontario, sisters Doris Crawford and Deborah Prince, nephews and nieces and their families, Kelly (Karin) Brown, Barclay Cornell, Morgan Cornell, Kevin Cornell, Katherine Cornell, and Shane Prince.
Beaver was born in South Porcupine, ON in 1942 and was very proud of the town, his friends, and all of the great hockey players to make their way from the area.
He moved to Powell River in the early 1960’s and through his life worked on many construction projects around the town and the Province, laying blocks and bricks, tile setting, installing awnings, or anything that was required.
Beaver owned three businesses: Beaver’s Sporting Goods and Tile Alley in Powell River, and D&D Sports in Vancouver.
He volunteered his time on projects such as doing the block work on the washrooms at Sunset Park and Larry Gouthro Park, and when he had Beaver’s Sporting Goods, he sent a few kids to play hockey, fully equipped, whether they could afford it or not.
If you knew Beaver you knew that he had a big compassionate heart and would help anyway that he could; had lots of stories of growing up in South Porcupine, in particular about guys who came to Powell River to play for the Regals and who made the NHL; and that he was involved in bringing lacrosse equipment to town and starting a league. Beaver could be outspoken and stuck up for the “little guy” which prompted him to run for Municipal Council, serving for 8 years between 1985 – 1999. What we remember most is the love and pride he had for his children and his granddaughters.
Beaver will be missed by his family and friends, and those who would surely benefit from his big heart and generosity….not to mention, the stories!
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to, make a donation to their favourite charity in Gord’s name. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Messages can be sent to rememberingbeaver@gmail.com
